Wife beating and abuse of women is known to some degree in all cultures. The difference is that in the United States, for example, such conduct is illegal and punishable through the courts, whereas in Islamic societies the institutions and laws themselves sanction—even promote—the beating of a wife.

The institution of polygamy is also sanctioned in the religious/cultural paradigm. In many areas of the Islamic world, a man is allowed to marry four wives at a time.54 The Prophet Muhammad established the precedent and led by example, taking more than nine wives himself. A man can also go through serial marriages, since he is allowed to dissolve a marriage unilaterally at any time by simply saying to his wife: “You are repudiated.” The woman who is repudiated suffers great shame and is ostracized from her community.

Within this system, the society sees the individual woman as entirely expendable. Hence the misogyny in which many Muslim boys grow up. They have all kinds of siblings born of different women, which gives them the idea that none of these women—including their own mother—was good enough to be cherished alone. The boys internalize this misogyny, which leads in turn to self-hate, since they come from their mothers. These feelings, as will be discussed more fully in chapter eleven, lead many Muslim men to psychologically abandon their mothers. This situation, as psychoanalyst and Arabist Nancy Kobrin has demonstrated, becomes directly connected to their urge for terror and suicide.55

The promise of the houris (eternal virgins with whom the Muslim warrior is purportedly rewarded for dying in holy war against nonbelievers) compounds the expendability of women. To add to this culture of misogyny, even the individual houri herself is expendable and not sacred or special in any way. As Fatna Sabbah notes, she “has no spiritual dimension; she is a thing because she has neither will nor any possibility of development.... [She] has no intellect; she does not think. She is a thing that awaits consumption.”56

The hatred of women is directly correlated with another aspect of the Islamist death cult. Women become mandatory victims in a culture whose lust for death necessitates scorn and loathing for the gender that bestows life. Western values, therefore, pose a severe danger to the death cult, since they threaten to liberate all the women in the world. In the age of globalization, mass communication, and the Internet, the West’s values are spreading with lightning quickness. The death cult’s response takes two forms: a war fought within the culture to eradicate the essence of what is female within its own women, and a jihad against free nations to crush the expansion of liberty and pluralism.

The war on terror, therefore, cannot be crystallized any more powerfully than with this formula: one side allows human freedom, including its sexual component, and accepts all the risks and costs that come with such freedom; the other side lusts for the incineration of every element of human desire, yearning for a sterilized utopia where human beings will be purged of what and who they are.
